5 Healthy Supermarket Snack Ideas

Healthy Supermarket Snack Ideas

We would love to have all the time in the world to make our own protein balls, healthy muffins and sugar-free nut butters, but life often gets in the way and we find ourselves without the time or grabbing a snack on the go. Fortunately, the supermarket is full of healthy, sugar free snack choices – you just have to know exactly where to look, and avoid temptation by skipping the junk food aisles. As with anything, though, be mindful of your portions, as it is very easy to eat your way through an entire bag of nuts without realising it. Here are 5 of our favourite sugar free, healthy supermarket snack ideas:

5 Sugar Free, Healthy Supermarket Snack Ideas

1. Blueberries

Blueberries are a fruit, however, they are relatively low in fructose compared with other fruits and they pack in a bunch of vitamin C and fibre. They are a great way to get your “sweet fix” without overdoing it, as they tend to come in small portion sizes. Strawberries and raspberries also make healthy, low fructose snacks. Dried berries a completely different story, however, as they don’t contain the fibre and water that fresh berries do. Be very mindful of your portions when consuming dried berries – or any dried fruit, for that matter – as it can be easy to overdo it and accidentally consume too much sugar!

2. Raw nuts

Raw nuts, such as almonds and macadamias, make a great healthy supermarket snack because they fill you up with good fats and plenty of fibre. It’s important to check that the nuts you are eating are raw, and don’t have all sorts of other ingredients added. Trail mix is usually also something to steer clear of, as they often add dried fruit, chocolate and other sugar-laden ingredients to make the mix taste good. Instead, make your own sugar free trail mix by combining raw almonds, pumpkin seeds, desiccated coconut and hazelnuts and separating into single-serve portions, so you don’t get tempted to eat it all in one go.

3. Cherry tomatoes

It’s hard to believe that cherry tomatoes aren’t laden with sugar, because they taste simply divine. Many supermarkets sell “snacking tomatoes” which are even sweeter than your standard cherry tomatoes. We’re also huge fans of golden cherry tomatoes, which are so delicious. It’s quite hard to eat too many tomatoes, as they usually come in fairly small punnets, so they make the perfect healthy supermarket snack.

4. Bocconcini

Bocconcini are delicious little mozzarella balls packed with low-carb, high-protein goodness. Pair some bocconcini with cherry tomatoes for the perfect healthy supermarket snack, add some basil or spinach for a DIY Caprese salad, or place on top of a flat bread or pita bread and grill for a healthy, sugar free pizza.

5. Carrots, Celery and Pesto

In an ideal world, you’d make your own pesto ahead of time, however there are some supermarket varieties that don’t contain nasty ingredients and are perfect when you’re in a rush. It’s very important to check the label on any pesto you buy, as they often have a bit of sneaky sugar lurking in there. Swap the crackers for some veggies, such as carrots or celery, as they are a more filling alternative.
